Movie 8 - "His Girl Friday"

This is a 1940 comedy directed by Howard Hawks starring Cary Grant as Walter, a newspaper editor and Rosalind Russell as Hildy, his ex-reporter and ex-wife.  Ralph Bellamy plays Hildy's new love interest, Bruce.  Get ready for fast-paced, witty, sarcastic dialogue!

Walter's whole life is the newspaper, which is why his marraige failed in the first place.  Hildy left after coming second in Walter's life and quickly met Bruce, fell in love, and got engaged.  After returning to the newspaper to break the news to Walter, she gets sucked back into a big story, trying to free a condemned man.  All the while, Walter is scheming to keep Hildy from quitting the newspaper.  From here all the hijinks begin!  Poor Bruce didn't know what hit him.  The whole while, Hildy and Walter bicker, zing each other with sarcasm, and show us why they work so well together.  Corruption and politics (I guess those can be used interchangeably) cause barrier after barrier for Hildy and Walter trying to free Earl Williams.  And Walter causes barrier after barrier for poor Brucey.  After Williams escapes, the two try to figure out a way to hide him until a solution can be found.  At the climactic end, it looks like all hope may be lost when Williams is found and taken away and Hildy and Walter are handcuffed.  At the final moment, the mean ole sheriff and politician get their due, when Williams is given a reprieve and charges are dropped for Hildy and Walter.  But what about Hildy and Bruce?  Have Walter's schemes ruined any hope for the two?  Does Hildy even want Bruce anymore?  Can she really give up the action-packed life of a newspaper reporter for a calm life with Bruce?  Or is she meant to be with Walter after all?

With the quick-paced back and forth between Grant and Russell, and everyone else for that matter, get ready for some whiplash with this movie!  You actually find your head turning left, right, left, and on and on to keep up with the dialogue.  But it is smart, funny, and sarcastic...my three favorite qualities.  Enjoy!
